This is going to be what my 2 1/2 year old daughter would call a “silly” post. For her something being silly is a badge of honor. She loves wearing mismatched shoes and putting the wrong color caps on her markers. Her elephant lovey named Lumpy is also very silly. One day my daughter decided that Lumpy needed a Christmas present. She wanted to make her a house. So we made Lumpy a cardboard box house.
I think this post is silly because there is absolutely nothing about this very simple craft that needs directions. But, I hope that this inspires you to create simple things that will bring your kids joy. For us this was making a cardboard box house for Lumpy. And yes we wrapped it and put it under our Christmas tree with the rest of our presents. Lumpy unwrapped her present along with the rest of our family on Christmas morning.
How to Build a Cardboard Box House for a Lovey:
Materials:
- Cardboard box
- Paint
- Foam Sheets
- White glue
Creating:
To start, my daughter painted the cardboard box. If you haven’t painted with your toddler before, check out these painting tips. I let my daughter pick out what colors of paint she wanted. Of course she choose to use Lumpy’s favorite colors. Then, we let it dry.
Once the paint was dry, I cut out a door that Lumpy could fit through.
Then, I cut out a bunch of shapes from foam sheets. My daughter told me what shapes and colors she wanted. As I cut them out, my daughter used white glue to glue them on. I also cut out Lumpy’s name, so it was obvious it was her house. We wouldn’t want her to have any unwelcome visitors.
Once my daughter was happy with how it looked, we let it fully dry. Then we wrapped it. My daughter helped me wrap most of the Christmas presents and Lumpy’s house was no exception.
Outcome of Making a Cardboard Box House for Lumpy
The house was actually barely used. Lumpy has taken a few naps in it, but that’s it. Thankfully, this project really wasn’t about the final product. It would have been fun if she used it all the time. But, making a project that was fully my daughter’s idea and letting her decide what needed done was the best part. As I mentioned before, I hope that this inspires you to let your child take the reigns every once in a while and make something they want. What is the silliest thing you have made with your kids?
