Q is for Quail Craft: Q-tips

Now that we are getting closer to the end of our animal alphabet crafts, we are getting to some harder letters. If you have seen any of our other alphabet crafts, you already know that we use craft supplies that start with the letter we are working on. There aren’t many craft supplies that start with Q. So, my three year old daughter and I ended up going with Q-tips for our Q is for quail craft.

Even after deciding this. I still wasn’t quite sure how we were going to take straight sticks and make them into a round Q quail. Thankfully, I came across this adorable sheep Q-tip craft from One Little Project. It gave me the idea to cut the tips off to use.

How to Make a Q is for Quail Craft Using Q-tips

Materials:

Gluing the Q-tips:

Before I got my preschooler’s help, I prepped a few things. First, I drew a Q shaped quail picture on a piece of cardstock. Here is a free download of my Q quail. Then, I cut the tips off of a ton of Q-tips. They liked to go flying when I cut them, so it turned into a bit of a scavenger hunt too.

Then, I called my daughter over. I just tested Elmer’s new extra strength glue sticks and thought they would work perfectly for this craft. White glue would work as well, it will just take longer to dry. I showed my daughter how to rub her glue stick on an area inside the Q and then place several Q-tip tips on that spot. She did this for a bit, but then decided that she was going to do the gluing and I was going to do the placing.

Once we filled the entire Q, we let it dry.

Painting the Q is for Quail Craft:

Now it was time to paint. My daughter picked out the blue and orange paint she wanted to use. Then, she painted everything but the beak blue. The entire time she told me that painting on the Q-tips was a weird texture, but she liked it. Once she finished with the blue, I gave her some orange for the beak.

Once again, we let it dry. My preschooler didn’t want to stop painting, so I gave her some scrap paper to paint.

Conclusion of Our Q is for Quail Craft

This ended up being an OK craft. It wasn’t my daughter’s favorite, but it wasn’t as meticulous as our H is for horse craft. She did really enjoy painting over the Q-tips and not every craft can be a favorite.

  1. People used to hunt quail in Oklahoma. I don’t remember ever eating them, but once ate several quail eggs. They are very small.
