H was a lot harder of a letter to come up with craft supplies for than I initially expected. My preschooler and I have already done animal themed alphabet crafts for A-G. To add a twist, we have been using craft supplies that start with the same letter. For our H is for horse craft, I finally came up with using a hole punch and a highlighter. This was my three year old daughter’s least favorite letter so far. But, there were still parts she really enjoyed. And I do think that with some tweaks (discussed below) this could have been a much more fun alphabet craft.
How to Make an H is for Horse Craft Using Letter H Craft Supplies
Materials:
- Hole punch (or an easy squeeze hole punch)
- Brown paper
- Glue (glue stick or white glue)
- Orange highlighter
Prep:
There are two things you need to prep for this craft. First, you need to hole punch brown paper a bunch of times. This was the part my daughter loved. She really struggled with being able to push the hole punch closed, but was so proud of herself every time she did. Whether you or your child does this part, you will need quite a bit. You can also get an easy squeeze hole punch that is easier for a kid to use.
Then, you need to draw a letter H with a horse head on a piece of paper. Or print this H shaped horse coloring page from Printabulls instead. Either way, make it small. Trust me, the smaller the H the better (you will see why below).
Gluing the Hole Punches on an H Shaped Horse:
Now that everything is ready, it is time to get started. My daughter used a glue stick to stick the hole punched dots on her H horse. After she glued a couple, I realized we were in trouble. My H was WAY too big. At my preschooler’s rate of speed she was going to learn to read before finishing this H is for horse craft. So, I asked her if it was alright if I made a smaller H instead.
We didn’t get far into the second H before my daughter decided she was done. I think that as much as she enjoyed using the hole punch the day before, it was still repetitive. She just wasn’t up for another repetitive task.
Several days later, we tried it again. This time we used white glue to make it a little different. I had her rub glue over a section of the H and then place several dots at a time on top. My daughter loves gluing, so she enjoyed that part.
This worked better, but I still ended up putting a lot of the hole punched dots on.
Adding Highlighter to the H is for Horse Craft:
To make this hole punched H look more like a horse, I had my daughter draw a tail and mane on it with an orange highlighter. When she started getting bored with the previous step, we took a break by drawing on these features. I drew a rough H on a spare piece of paper and showed my daughter where on the H to draw. Then, she drew on the real H with the highlighter.
There were a few spots that had wet glue that messed with the highlighter. Waiting until the glue was dry would have been better.
Conclusion of Our H is for Horse Craft
My daughter loved the hole punching part of this craft, but she got so bored gluing them on. Both of us were ready by the end to move on to our next alphabet craft (it’s a super fun one). With how much she enjoyed hole punching, I should try some of these hole punch activities from Books and Giggles with her. My daughter does now shout “horse” every time she sees a capital H.
I do think if we were to do it again, we could tweak it to be less boring. I would maybe make the H even smaller. Or make the H on brown paper and add just a few hole punch dots as markings. We could even color the horse in with the highlighter and make the mane and tail from the hole punch dots. Let me know in the comments if you try any of these alternates and if your child enjoys them.

I like horses a lot.
They are definitely cool animals.
