Sometimes my daughter blows me away at how much she has learned doing crafts. Just a month or two ago we tried doing a very similar tissue paper panda craft. I had the idea of doing tissue paper texturing on a balloon. We didn’t get far before I realized there was no way I was going to be able to pop the balloon without destroying the whole thing. My three year old daughter also struggled to manipulate the tissue paper and I ended up doing a lot of it. Well, we tried the 3D tissue paper technique again today and she did great.

This time, I bailed on the balloon part and had my daughter try on a printed sheet of paper instead. I asked her if she remembered how we did it last time and she said yes. Then, she immediately just started doing it with no help at all. I didn’t even talk her through any of it. Somehow, with no practice, she went from needing a lot of help to none at all. It is truly amazing how quickly kids develop and I love seeing that through the crafts we make.

How to Make a Textured Tissue Paper Panda Craft

Materials:

3D Tissue Paper Prep:

Before starting, you need to do a little prep. First, you need your picture. You can use a coloring book page, a drawing, or a printed out picture. I found a picture of a panda on Clip Safari. Not only does my daughter love pandas, it is the perfect starter picture. It only has two colors that are very distinct.

Then, you need to cut your tissue paper into a bunch of little squares. They should be approximately the same size, but don’t need to be perfect. An older kid that is good with scissors could help with this step. Lastly, you need to fill a small paper cup or something similar with glue.

Making the Tissue Paper Panda Craft:

Now, it is time to do three steps over and over again.

  1. Place the end of your pencil on top of a tissue paper square and wrap the tissue paper around it.
  2. Dip the end of the pencil into the glue.
  3. Place the tissue paper down on your picture and pull up on the pencil.

Repeat these steps until you have covered your entire picture. Or, if you have the attention span of my three year old daughter, repeat until you get bored. My daughter also decided to draw arms and legs on the panda and sign her name with the pencil she was using.

Conclusion of Our 3D Textured Panda Craft

As I said above, my daughter blew me away with how well she did this craft. It is great for practicing fine motor skills and matching colors. She did seem to really enjoy doing it even though she got bored after not that many pieces. I think that using tissue paper to make a 3d texture is really cool and we will definitely have to do it again sometime. What picture did your child texture with tissue paper?
