These toddler DIY Christmas ornaments were so much fun to make, I forgot to take pictures! How is that for a sales pitch? But really, I got so into making both mine and helping my daughter make hers, that I completely forgot. When my family all got together for a week, we wanted to do a craft together. My sister-in-law had made some of these wood ornaments in the past, so we decided to make them. Since my 2 1/2 year old daughter loves painting, she made some too.

How to Paint Toddler DIY Christmas Ornaments

Supplies:

  • Wood
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Cups
  • Plates
  • Paper Towels
  • String

Setup:

The first thing we did was toddler-proof everything. We made these at my grandma’s house who has carpet under her table (yikes!). So we put trash bags all around and on my daughter’s chair. We also put a tablecloth on the table for all of us. Then we filled up cups with water, put out paper towels, and put out plates.

Creating:

We painted a lot like we did when we painted my daughter’s prize box. She told me what color she wanted, I squirted it on her plate, and she painted it on the wood ornament. When she finished a color, she dipped her brush in the water to clean it off and dried it on her paper towel. My toddler did this until she decided she was done and wanted a new ornament. She made three ornaments before she got bored and wanted to run around.

Between giving my toddler paint and making sure she was cleaning her brush, I made my own ornaments. My daughter’s favorite animal is a panda, so I painted a panda in a Santa hat. I made my 7 month old son a toast person also in a Santa hat since he loves to eat and his favorite food is toast. The last ornament I made was a snowman with a Lumpy head. If you aren’t familiar with Lumpy, she is my daughter’s spoiled elephant lovey blanket (see more Lumpy inspired crafts).

After they all dried, it was time to tie the string through the hole. This made them into actual ornaments. Our wood slabs came with predrilled holes, but if yours don’t you will have to drill a hole before tying the string.

My whole family had a blast and everyone’s turned out great. Whether you make these with a large group, your kid, or by yourself I’m sure you will have so much fun you will forget to take pictures too. Comment below what you made (or want to make) for your wood Christmas ornaments.
