One of my daughter’s first words was “za” which meant pizza. Now that she is 2 1/2, she still answers pizza most of the time when I ask her what she wants to eat. Last week my extended family went and got a 3 foot across pizza. and my daughter ate her fair share of it. Since ordering pizza isn’t always reasonable, I will often make bagel pizzas with my toddler. Instead of making a crust you just add pizza ingredients to a bagel and you get a super easy and delicious lunch. They are so easy that my toddler normally helps me make each bagel pizza and does most of the work.

Prep:

A bagel pizza is absolutely perfect for getting your toddler to help. All the prep you need to do is preset the oven to 380 F and put some bagels on a pizza sheet. If you have a silicone mat it will make cleanup so much easier. And yes I did use blueberry bagels. I used them out of necessity back in my college days and have never looked back. I know it sounds strange, but it’s really good.

Creating:

Now is when it gets fun and probably a little messy. I handed my daughter a spoon and a jar of pizza sauce and let her go at it. I pointed out bagels that needed more sauce, but that’s it. With some patience, all the bagels got enough sauce. I ended up giving her a napkin so we didn’t have to stop every two seconds to wash her hands.

Then I gave her a bowl full of shredded cheese. I used mozzarella, but use whatever you like. My daughter then dumped the cheese on, while I again pointed out spots that she missed. She did some with her hands and some with a spoon. Cheese will get all over which is why those silicone mats are so handy.

Lastly, I gave her handfuls of pepperoni. She carefully separated each piece and put them on the pizzas. You can use whatever toppings you and your child like best.

I promise that I did none of the saucing, cheesing, and pepperoning and they look great. I have made bagel pizzas with my toddler several times, so give your child a few chances and I bet they can do all of that cooking on their own too.

Now I took back over and stuck the cookie sheet into the oven. With your kid learning to help more in the kitchen, this is always a great time to remind them to never touch the oven. The bagel pizzas took about 8 minutes to cook which gave me time to cut up some grapes and do a few dishes. Then we dug into our super yummy pizzas.
