Kids and PB&J sandwiches go together like…well…peanut butter and jelly. It is a great food to pack when you are going to be out and about as well as a super easy and quick lunch for home. Also, making a modified PB&J with your toddler is also a great way to practice spreading and helping out in the kitchen.

As a child whenever we went hiking we always brought peanut butter and honey tortillas. These took the normal PB&Js to an even higher functionality level. It took jelly that needed refrigerated out of the equation and swapped easily squished bread with a squish-proof tortilla. Now that I am a parent I have found that they are a great toddler meal to both eat and make with my 2 1/2 year old daughter.

Setup:

All the setup I needed to do was grab a plate and put a tortilla on it.

Creating:

The creating was also super easy, but it did take a long time. To start I gave my daughter a plastic knife and spoon and let her spread. Then she alternated back and forth between the peanut butter and jelly. I used peanut butter and jelly but you can use whatever spreads your toddler enjoys.

It worked best when she used the knife for the peanut butter and the spoon for the jelly but she switched back and forth. She also had a pretty hard time getting the jelly out, so I mostly gave her spoonfuls of it to spread. My daughter was so proud of her self and probably would have continued all day if I didn’t eventually stop her.

Once it had plenty of spreads on it, I took and rolled up the tortilla. I then cut it into little circles. If you have an older or more experienced toddler you could have them do one or both of these steps.

This was such a fun lunch to make and it would work great for bringing on a picnic or a hike. If you enjoyed making this modified PB&J with your toddler, try out some of my other cooking with toddler ideas like making quesadillas and bagel pizzas.
