Last week we had a family reunion of sorts. There were about 20 of us and a week packed full of fun adventures. With a toddler and a baby involved it also meant lots of interrupted naps, new people and strange toilets. I wanted a convenient way to continue to encourage my headstrong toddler to be on her best behavior and not regress in her potty training. I wanted to make her a vacation sticker chart, but I needed it to be a little different than ones I had made her in the past. Here were my requirements:
- Add stickers while out and about
- Give small prizes along the way to keep up excitement
- Bigger prize for the end of the week
- Fun theme
With these requirements in mind, I came up with this fun zoo theme. It has both a large zoo map and smaller animal habitats. Once I came up with the idea, it didn’t take much to put together.
How to Make a Zoo-Themed Vacation Sticker Chart
Supplies:
- Green and blue cardstock
- Tan paper
- Scissors
- Sticky tack
- Stickers
Creating:
The first thing you want to do is decide how big of a “zoo” you want. I made mine the size of two sheets of paper. Then I cut irregular rounded shapes out of the blue and green cardstock. As I cut them, I traced them on the tan paper. I tried to make them so that there was what looked like a path between the shapes. Once I finished, I had a pile of animal habitats and a zoo map to place them on. I drew grass on the green pieces and waves on the blue pieces. This made the cardstock pieces look more like animal habitats and to helped me remember which side to put the stickers on.
Once we got to my mom’s house, where we were staying, I used sticky tack to hang up the empty zoo map. Then I put the animal habitats, stickers, and Hershey kisses (small prizes) in my diaper bag.
Since my diaper bag got brought everywhere we went, my daughter could put a sticker on one of the animal habitats wherever we were. I got stickers with land and sea animals and had her put the land ones on the grass and the sea ones on the water. When she got 4 in one habitat, she got a Hershey kiss. When we got back to my mom’s we used more sticky tack to place it on the map. Once she filled up the whole zoo, she got a special bigger prize. Since I used sticky tack to hang it all, I can reuse it by tracing the old habitats on new cardstock and reusing the zoo map.
I found this zoo habitat and map idea such a convenient vacation sticker chart and my daughter absolutely loved it. We had no potty regressions and my very shy daughter was letting relatives she only met that week hold her by the end. I even almost got her to use a porta potty in the mountains. Enjoy trying this out with your own kids and if you are looking for more sticker charts, check out this fun space themed one I made my daughter. And here is a great list of some of the best places you can travel with a toddler that I enjoyed reading.
