I don’t know about you, but almost all of my least favorite kids’ toys are favors or favor-like toys. In just a couple days they are often broken and not really something that gets played with much. But, my kids have this special memory associated with these toys that make them hard to get rid of. And yes, I am guilty of giving out these toys. But, I am trying to be better and give out more useful things. Knowing that they would be used, I gave out Play Doh party favors for my son’s trash truck party theme. To make them fit the theme I painted them to look like trash cans.

I also gave out bouncy balls (they didn’t fit the theme, but my son absolutely loves them). Both of these items went inside a paper trash truck favor box that I made each child. This all made for frugal, but hopefully not cheap feeling favors for my son’s third birthday party.
How to Make Play Doh Party Favors Look Like Trash Cans
Materials:
Painting the Trash Cans:
Making them is pretty straightforward, but here are some instructions anyways.
First, paint your Play Doh containers with grey acrylic paint. It took me a couple coats to fully cover the writing on the containers. I had a bunch of off brand modeling dough from the Dollar Tree leftover from Halloween that I used. But here is bulk name brand Play Doh that would be even better.

Then, paint black stripes going up your Play Doh container. I started by using an acrylic paint pen, but then switched to black acrylic paint. It turns out just using a small brush and normal paint was easier and looked better.

Lastly, paint over it all with Mod Podge. This isn’t necessary, but it will help the paint not chip off.

Conclusion of Painting Trash Can Play Doh Party Favors
Out of everything I made for my son’s garbage truck party, this wasn’t one of my favorites. But, it was a fun way to add the theme to a useful favor. And my kids were very excited that their modeling dough looked like a trash can. I will probably paint Play Doh containers again as an easy way to incorporate a birthday theme.
