Yes, that is supposed to be an E shaped elephant. While, this E is for elephant craft didn’t turn out in the looks department, it was still a lot of fun. E is a hard letter to come up with crafts for. I found these cute egg carton elephants, but I couldn’t quite figure out how to turn them into the shape of an E. I also thought about using embroidery thread or envelopes, but couldn’t figure that out either. So, I instead went the food route and had my three year old daughter make eggs in the form of a meringue and then add color with edible paint.

Making the E is for Elephant Egg Meringue:

I enjoy baking, but I am by no means an expert. So, instead of showing you how to make an egg meringue, here is the meringue recipe I followed. My three year old daughter loves helping in the kitchen from her learning tower. So, she helped me turn our mixer on and off and she poured the ingredients into the bowl. We mixed black food coloring in at the very end to make it grey, but after it cooked you couldn’t tell.

Then, I drew a capital E with an elephant ear, trunk, and tail on the back of my piece of parchment paper. Since, I needed to flip it, I made sure to draw it backwards. Then, I placed it on a cookie sheet.

Once the meringue was all mixed up, we piped it. I am out of piping bags, so I just used a plastic gallon bag with a piping tip. You can forget the piping tip as well and just cut a small opening on the corner of your plastic bag. I helped guide my daughter as she squeezed all of the meringue out of the piping bag. We probably should have used a bigger tip and less meringue, but oh well.

Once my daughter finished piping, I put it in the oven and cooked it until it was golden brown on the top. It supposedly comes off the parchment paper easily when it is fully cooked. Our elephant was so thick that it was sticky on the bottom, but almost burnt on the top. At this point, there was no way to tell it was supposed to be an E is for elephant craft.

Decorating the E is for Elephant Craft With Edible Paint:

So, I spent my daughter’s nap trying to come up with some way to add color and details. Of course I wanted to use something starting with an E. I finally came up with edible paint. I found this edible paint recipe online, halved it, and made gray, black, white, and pink using food coloring.

Once my daughter was up, I had her paint it on with a pastry brush. You could also use a new paintbrush. To do the black dot in the middle of the eye she used the end of a spoon.

After my daughter finished adding the edible paint, it looked more like an elephant in the shape of an E.

Conclusion of Our E is for Elephant Craft

Our E is for elephant craft isn’t going to win any beauty pageants. It probably won’t even be recognized as an E or an elephant out of context. But, it was still a lot of fun. My daughter enjoyed the piping, the painting, and of course the eating. She specifically asked to eat the eye. Both my daughter and her stuffed elephant lovey blanket named Lumpy approved of doing an elephant craft. What do you think our meringue creation looks like?
