Before having kids, I was a software developer. I quit about three weeks before having my daughter, knowing that I wanted to stay at home with her. I spent those three weeks napping, watching movies, and painting letters for a baby name sign. Her room was painted by my mom and I wanted to add my own personal touch. When my son was born, I made him some too. Of course being the second child, he got his several weeks after he was born.

I really enjoyed making both sets. As you can see from the pictures, they have completely different designs. I hope you can get some ideas and inspiration from what I did and make what fits your own child.

How to Paint Letters for a Baby Name Sign

Supplies:

Creating my Daughter’s Baby Name Sign:

To start, I painted the entire letter white. Then, I placed tape in horizontal strips leaving space between the strips. I then alternated painting purple, pink, and yellow on the open areas.

Once the colored paint dried, I peeled up my tape. Unfortunately since I used cardboard letters, this peeled up some of the cardboard with it. This meant I had to repaint some of my white. This needed done super carefully to not mess up my straight lines.

I did half of my letters with this design and half of them with solid purple, pink, and yellow backgrounds with large white polka dots. To make the polka dots, I used the same trick as I did with my stripes, but used circle shaped stickers instead of tape. Keep reading to learn how I hung them up.

Creating my Son’s Baby Name Sign:

For my son’s, I wanted to avoid all the repainting I had to do with his sisters. I thought about using wood this time, but I wanted their letter fonts to match. So, I still went with the cardboard ones, but avoided using any tape or stickers. I painted half of his dark blue and the other half dark purple.

Once they were dry, I took little confetti silver stars and glued them on. The glue dried clear on the painted area, but left a film on several of the stars. Thankfully, I was able to scratch it off with my fingernails.

Hanging Both:

When I made my daughter’s baby name sign, I was already planning on her eventually being moved to a different room. I didn’t want to attach her letters in a way that would ruin them to move them. I was afraid that sticky tack or Command poster strips would either tear off the back of the cardboard or not be strong enough to hold them up.

Instead, I found these super cool Command picture hanging strips. They work kind of like Velcro, but instead of a hook side and a loop side, both sides are the same. I put two pairs of strips on each letter. Then, I peeled off the adhesive on the top piece and stuck it on the wall to know where they went. I carefully separated the two sides of each strip to take the letter off. Next, I let the wall side strips adhere with no weight on them for an hour or so before putting the letters back up.

When my daughter moved to her new room, I peeled the letters off and put them up on her new wall. Since there were already picture hanging strips on the letters, I only had to put new ones on the wall. I was able to reuse some of them on my daughter’s old wall to hang up my son’s letters. The strips that didn’t overlap with my son’s letters came off super easily. Neither set of letters has ever fallen off the wall.

Conclusion:

I hope you have been inspired to make your own nursery a unique baby name sign. A splash of something cute and homemade is what every baby’s room needs. You could even make one for or during a baby shower. Also, check out how your baby can paint their own name. What design did you go with?
