Several months ago, I was looking up crafts that use silicone molds and I came across this chalk recipe. Since chalk is pretty much a requirement for childhood, I have been looking for an excuse to make it ever since. My daughter’s under the sea birthday party gave me that excuse. I wanted to give out favors that worked for a wide range of ages and were actually useful. Homemade chalk shaped like seashells fit that perfectly. And what made it even better was my three year old daughter was able to help.

How to Make Homemade Chalk

Supplies:

Creating:

As mentioned before, I got my recipe from another crafting blog. It was super simple, but I did change things around a bit to work better for us. First, we mixed the color or colors of tempera paint we wanted in a bowl. I only bought yellow, red, and blue paint, so it was a fun opportunity to talk to my three year old about color mixing. Once we liked the color, we mixed in 1/3 cup of water. Then, I added 1/3 cup of Plaster of Paris. This created a bit of a cloud, so I did this part away from my daughter.

Then, my daughter spooned the mixture into the mold. I used a seashell mold to match my daughter’s party theme, but any shape would work. We ended up making 10 sets of chalk, so by the end she was really good about getting the right amount in each one.

Lastly, we waited. After several hours, it was safe to pop them out and put them on a tray. They sat there for about three days in order to fully dry. Since I only had one silicone mold I was using, it took a long time to make all the shells I needed. The seashell mold did come as a two pack, but I saved the other mold for my food items. Check out all of the other things I made with my molds here. Since this was the first time making chalk, we did have to go try it out on the patio. And guess what? It looked like chalk!

When all the chalk was finally done, I put one of each shape (with as much color variety as possible) in a small bag. I put a cute label on each bag and put one in each kid’s favor beach pail.

Outcome of Homemade Chalk:

I won’t lie. I was so ready to finish making this chalk. But really only because I made so much and was only using one mold. It was a lot of fun for the first few batches and my daughter loved being able to help as much as she did. If I did it again, I would definitely use more molds. I would also love to experiment more with different paints to see if I could get brighter colors. Or maybe even try for a marbled color look. What shape chalk do you think your child would love? And make sure to check out the other fun things I made for my daughter’s under the sea party.
