I think that silicone molds are some of the coolest things. They come in so many shapes and sizes, that you can pretty much find exactly what you want. I also love how versatile they are. There are about a million ways you can use silicone molds for crafting. For just my daughter’s under the sea party, I used a double pack of seashell molds to make four different things.

How to Use Silicone Molds for Crafting

1. Making Crayons

A silicone mold makes creating your own crayons so easy. It is a great way to reuse old crayons that you have laying around. And if you don’t have a bunch, ask around. I got all the crayons I needed to make seashell crayons favors for my daughter’s party from a local buy nothing group. They were all really beat up and kinda gross, but it didn’t matter since they got melted down. My three year old daughter also likes to help pick crayon colors and put them in the molds. 2. Making Chalk

In addition to the seashell crayons, I also made seashell shaped chalk favors. This will require you to buy Plaster of Paris and tempera paint if you don’t already have it laying around. But, it is a lot of fun to make and to experiment with different colors. I was also very surprised at how much it felt and acted like store bought chalk. My daughter also loved helping make these. Here are instructions on how to make your own chalk.

3. Making Cake Decorations

This seashell mold ended up being the star of my daughter’s beach cake. I used white chocolate filled with chocolate ice cream, but any food material that hardens would work great in these. Notice, that the color of the mold did change. The seashell molds came in a two pack and I used one for food and one for crafts just to be on the safe side. Details on how to make these seashell cake decorations are in my beach cake tutorial.

4. Making Ice

Not that the first three ideas were complicated, but this is even easier. You can make shaped ice in your mold. I added my seashell ice to the ocean punch I made. Since my molds were pretty flexible, I placed them empty in the freezer. Then, I poured water into them, so none spilled in transit. That’s it, no extra tutorial on this one. But, if the punch looks super yummy, here is where I got the punch recipe.

Conclusion of Silicone Molds for Crafting:

I still love how versatile silicone molds are. The little bit of texture detail made everything I made with them look so much better. For all of the above, I used this seashell mold. But, I think that having a basic stick and dome mold are great to have on hand for crafts that come up. Dollar Tree also seems to have a mold for every season if you want a variety for cheap.
