Make a Door Latch Cover in 5 Minutes or Less

My 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son started sharing a room a few months ago. While bedtime was a bit of an adjustment, nap time is still really hard. My daughter starts her nap later and they both get up at the same time. Without fail, my daughter will slam the door and wake him up when going in. Even when we open and shut the door for her, it often made enough noise to wake him. When my daughter stayed a few days at my parent’s house, my son slept so much better. The morning she returned, I made this door latch cover in 5 minutes in an attempt to keep him napping good.

This was over a month ago, and it is still keeping that door nice and quiet. But, after seeing the cat chase a moth downstairs, my son now slams all the doors shut when he goes downstairs. I’m not sure why she is only scary when downstairs, but it means there is another door that often gets slammed shut. To share this simple and useful craft with you guys, I made another door latch cover for the downstairs door.

So start your stopwatch and learn how to make your door quieter in less than 5 minutes.

How to Make a Door Latch Cover

Materials:

Making the Door Latch Cover:

First, you need a rectangle of felt. I used a piece I had leftover from making my felt storage system for toys. It was 3″ x 3.75″, but any size in that ballpark will work. Next, cut a slit along both short sides of the piece of felt.

Next, take a piece of elastic cord and wrap it around the doorknobs on either side of your door. Cut it to that length. You want it to be tight, but also still fit around the knobs once tied. Now, you have all of your pieces. Thread the piece of elastic through the slits you cut in your felt and tie the ends together.

Lastly, wrap the elastic around the knobs so that the piece of felt covers the door latch. That’s it, you have made your very own door latch cover. But, I went one step further.

Making the Door Even Quieter:

After making the door latch cover, my door was noticeably quieter. But, I could still slam it and the top of the door hitting the frame made a loud noise. To make it even quieter, I took 30 seconds to add one more thing.

First, cut a very small square of felt. Then, use sticky tack to stick it in the very top corner of your door frame. And VOILA, your door will be basically slam proof.

Conclusion of Making a Door Latch Cover

OK, what does your stopwatch say? It probably took you longer to gather your materials than it did to actually use them. We have used our original door latch cover for a little over a month and our door is still nice and quiet. Did it solve all naptime problems? Sadly, no. It only quiets the door and not my daughter who still tries to “accidently” wake up my son almost every nap. But, I love not hearing the door slam. Have you tried to solve any problems with crafts before?

Here are other crafts you can make with any felt or elastic you have left over from making this handy craft.
