Paw Patrol Activity: A DIY Felt Board With Pups and Vehicles

Making this cool Paw Patrol activity singlehandedly made planning my daughter’s birthday party more hectic than it should have been. I had purposely started planning her party early to get a head start and avoid stress. With plenty of time left to plan, I looked online for Paw Patrol birthday party inspiration. I stumbled upon At Home With Natalie’s Paw Patrol DIY felt board and decided to make it. Because it obviously made sense to start a time extensive project that wouldn’t be used much at her party. Ok, maybe it was a bad idea, but I justified it by making it the main part of her birthday present.

I want to make it clear that a lot of this idea came straight from At Home With Natalie’s blog. So, I want to encourage you to also check out her directions if you decide to make this fun project yourself. I did decide that my daughter was more into the pups than the vehicles, so I added to her idea and made all the pups too. And what is cool, is the steps I used to make the pups, can be used to make felt board creations for absolutely anything.

How to Make a DIY Felt Board Paw Patrol Activity

Materials:

Making the Felt Vehicles and Lookout:

To start, I made the felt vehicles and lookout for the DIY felt board. At Home With Natalie has patterns that I was able to download and use to make these. I cut out the patterns, pinned them on felt, and cut out the felt. Then, I hand sewed all the pieces together with a needle. I used white thread on everything and big stitches to make it as quick as possible.

Making the Paw Patrol Pups:

Next, I made the pups. I did not have any patterns to make these with, so I made my own. I knew that if I tried to draw them myself they would be unrecognizable. So, I printed off a coloring sheet of the pups from coloring.info instead. It had more detail on it than I was willing to sew on. So, before I did any cutting, I color coded all of my pieces. I colored over any details that I didn’t want and made note of which color the base piece should be. Lastly, I put a piece of cardstock over the coloring page and traced all the pieces I would need by holding it up against a window.

Now that I had my pattern, I did the same as I did for the vehicles and lookout. I cut out each piece of the pattern, pinned it onto my felt, and then cut out the felt. Then, I sewed each piece on to my base color. Lastly, I used a Sharpie to draw the faces and some details on each pup. To finish off the faces, I hot glued googly eyes on.

Making the DIY Felt Board:

Now all I needed was a felt board to use with my Paw Patrol activity pieces. Unfortunately, I could not find a large piece of blue felt in stores to use for the sky. So, I ended up dyeing a piece of white felt. I followed wikiHow’s directions to dye the felt with acrylic paint. I filled a bucket with water and some blue paint. Then, I fully dunked my piece of white felt into it. Once it was all covered, I laid the wet felt out on a plastic tablecloth in the sun that the back door lets in. I love the color I got and the slightly less even color makes it just look more sky-like.

Now that I had a piece of blue felt, I once again used At Home With Natalie’s instructions as a base. She sews (this time on a sewing machine) a large piece of green felt to a large piece of blue felt. Then, she staples them to the back of a large canvas to make the DIY felt board. I did the same thing with my dyed blue felt and a piece of green and it worked great. After all that work, I was done and my daughter’s Paw Patrol activity was complete.

Conclusion of Making a Felt Paw Patrol Activity

To be honest, I have to laugh at how short this post ended up being. For taking me so much time to make, it really was pretty simple. While it took a while, it was a good excuse to sit and relax. When I worked on it in front of my daughter, I only did pieces that wouldn’t give away that it was Paw Patrol. She knew I was making something for her, but was still surprised when I gave her Paw Patrol activity to her.

I am really proud of how this DIY felt board turned out. The pups and vehicles are all immediately recognizable. My 4 year old daughter enjoys acting out Paw Patrol missions on it. On the other hand, my two year old son likes to attempt to use the felt board as a ramp. So, it isn’t taken out as often as I would like. I am also a little disappointed in how poorly the felt sticks. I was hoping it would stay without having to stick it on just right. One of these days I will experiment with it and see what I can add to the backs to help it stick.

But, all that being said, I am already thinking about what felt pieces I can make for it next. What kind of felt pieces do you think your child would enjoy the most?
