Several months ago, I dyed rice with my 4 and 2 year olds. We all had a lot of fun. Knowing we were going to make this R is for rabbit craft, I purposely had my kids make some pink rice. My 4 year old daughter asks 100 whys a minute, so she quickly found out that I was saving it for her next alphabet craft. Well, being pregnant, I spent more time napping than prepping crafts. So, it took me a long time to get around to drawing the R for this craft. But, the whole time my daughter periodically asked when we were going to make her rabbit craft.
So, here is the long anticipated R is for rabbit craft.

How to Make an R is for Rabbit Craft Using Rice and Ribbon
Materials:
- R is for Rabbit craft template (or make your own)
- White and pink rice (learn how to dye it here)
- Black ribbon
- White glue
Prepping the R is for Rabbit Craft:
Before involving my kids, I prepped all the supplies. First, I drew up an R shaped rabbit picture. You can draw your own or print mine here. Then, I placed the pink dyed rice we had already made and some white rice on a plate. Lastly, I cut black ribbon into good whisker sized pieces. The ribbon I had on hand was too wide, so I cut it in half width-wise.
Gluing the Rice:
Next, I gathered my 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son to start making their R is for rabbit crafts. I gave them each a prepped plate of rice and an R shaped rabbit printout. My daughter is really good with glue, so I gave her a bottle of white glue as well. I pre-spread my son’s whole R shape with glue.
Then, I let them place rice as they wished. My daughter very carefully placed all her white rice and then all of her pink rice where it belonged. My son just put rice everywhere.
Adding the Ribbon Whiskers:
After both kids finished with their rice, we glued ribbon whiskers on their rabbits. Well, my daughter glued ribbon on and my son didn’t want to so he didn’t. I showed my daughter where whiskers go on a rabbit and she glued them there.
After she finished her rabbit, we let them dry. They both had quite a bit of glue on them, so it took a while. Then, I shook them over a trash can to get rid of any rice that wasn’t glued down. Finally, I hung them with the rest of our alphabet crafts on our art clothesline.
Conclusion of Our R is for Rabbit Craft
This alphabet craft was very simple, but both of my kids enjoyed it. My four year was very excited to start our alphabet crafts back up. My son has done some with us and this was a great one for him to participate in too. Now that he is a bit older he will probably get to do most of the rest of the alphabet with us. Whether you use it for an R rabbit craft or not, I would definitely recommend “coloring” with dyed rice.
