Yes, I realize I am a little crazy for hand polka dotting all the utensils and cups for my son’s ball party. But, I couldn’t find any that I liked to buy and I recently got cool acrylic paint pens that I wanted to try. It did take a while to finish all my painted plastic utensils and cups. But, it was a great excuse to sit back and watch something while I worked.

I think that anyone reading this can pretty easily guess how I made these. Step 1: get utensil or cup. Step 2: paint on polka dots. So, instead of giving you step by step directions, I am going to give you some tips I learned instead.

Tips for DIY Painted Plastic Utensils and Cups

Tip 1 – Buy the right supplies:

Buying the wrong style of utensils was my biggest mistake. It would have gone a lot quicker and my dots would have looked a lot better if I had bought smooth plastic flatware. Instead, I bought some with a textured pattern. This made it almost impossible to get perfect circles.

Tip 2 – Use paint pens:

I used really fun acrylic paint pens to draw all my polka dots. They were perfect for this project because they dry super fast. They also have small tips which let me draw various sized polka dots on each piece of silverware and cup. The box came with so many colors that I was able to match my polka dots to the balloons in my son’s DIY balloon garland.

Tip 3 – Remember what you are painting:

The forks, spoons, and cups you are coloring are going in someone’s mouth. This means two things. First, don’t paint where their mouth is going to go. Second, keep things clean. Wash your hands before painting, only touch the handles, and always place them somewhere clean. My cat really wanted to cuddle every time I worked on them, so I had to lock her out of the room.

Tip 4 – Give yourself lots of time:

These painted plastic utensils and cups are going to take a while. They take very little thinking, so they are easy to multitask with. So, take the excuse to watch a show, listen to an audiobook, or call a friend while you work on these.

Tip 5 – Have fun:

If this sounds like tedious torture to you…don’t do it. Buy some polka dot utensils and cups or just go without. They won’t make or break your party.
