DIY Disney Princess Party – Games, Decor, and Cake

My daughter has been on a Disney princess kick lately. So, she decided she wanted a Disney princess party for her 5th birthday. Instead of theming around all the Disney princesses, we narrowed it down to four. We decided to just do the princesses in the movies she has actually seen. This was Rapunzel, Elsa, Cinderella, and Aurora (Sleeping Beauty). Some of my below ideas are princess specific, but will work for any princess with little to no adaptation. We used purple, blue, and pink as our colors to match these princesses’ dresses.

We all had a lot of fun at her party, and it was all pretty simple to put together. Keep scrolling to learn how to make fun, easy, and cheap Disney princess party decorations, food, and activities.

This post is an overview on everything I made for my daughter’s party, but I will make more in depth posts as well. My goal is to get everything posted soon, but getting everything written always takes longer than I expect. So, if there is a specific thing you want more details on, please comment at the bottom of this post. I will prioritize it and try to get you more thorough instructions ASAP.

How to Throw a DIY Disney Princess Party

Invitations:

To have a party, you need to invite guests. Before starting anything else, we sent out these cute Disney princess invitations from Poster My Wall. The invites had a couple extra princesses on them. So, on their website, I edited them out and duplicated the remaining ones to fill in the empty space. Then, I filled in my daughter’s party details, printed them out on white cardstock, and mailed them.

Disney Princess Party Food:

Domino’s must love when we have birthday parties, because we almost always have pizza. Along with our ridiculous amount of pizza, we had fruit, vegetables, juice and cake.

Princess Castle Cake

A few years ago, my parent’s got me a cake pan that lets you make any letter or number. I have used this cake pan for all of my kids’ birthday cakes. My daughter decided she wanted a princess castle cake and I made it into the shape of a 5 to keep with tradition. I made a castle cake for my son’s first birthday party and I used that as inspiration for this one. I used Candy Melts and a chocolate bar mold to make the walls. Then, I used Cinderella, Sleeping beauty, Rapunzel, and Elsa Tonie characters as decorations. The cake itself was an ice cream cake and was delicious. More instructions (and a recipe) are coming.

Princess Food Setup

I learned from my son’s recent trash truck party, that theming the food area instead of the food is much easier. So, I did that once again and made this fun little princess castle counter. I never took a picture of it with actual food, but I filled one of the tiered trays with fruit and the other with veggies. I also placed a bowl out between them that I filled with princess Goldfish.

The paper castle is made entirely out of cardstock and school glue. I used my Brother Scan N Cut to cut all the pieces from Mr Jo Craft’s tutorial. Once the party was over, I gave it my daughter. All the roofs come off and you can store things inside of it. I also folded all the napkins to look like princess dresses. I put all the remaining ones off to the side with the forks. Instructions on how to fold napkins to look like dresses coming soon.

Drink Setup

Our drink setup was just as simple. I once again used my Brother Scan N Cut and cut out crowns from glittery pink vinyl. My daughter really wanted to help, so she placed them on clear plastic cups. This meant that most of them were crooked, but it was her party and she was really proud of helping. Then, I put a bottle of Simply lemonade and Simply juice near these festive cups.

Disney Princess Party Decorations:

As I already mentioned, we used pink, purple, and blue for all our decorations. This was to match Sleeping Beauty’s, Rapunzel’s, Cinderella’s, and Elsa’s dresses. We didn’t do a whole bunch of decorations, but I like how the ones we did turned out.

Balloon Column Towers

I have made a balloon garland for my son’s past two parties and everybody really liked them. For my daughter’s princess party, I made them into balloon towers instead. I wish I had bought more balloons for it so it could have been taller, but besides that it turned out really good. I used balloon column stands, balloons, and wrapping paper to make them. More instructions are coming soon.

Princess Carriage Birthday Banner

Next, I made a princess birthday banner that my daughter absolutely loved. I used my Brother Scan N Cut to cut out a princess carriage frame pattern from cardstock. Then, I printed off pictures of Disney princesses to put inside each frame. As a fun addition, I printed a picture of my daughter wearing a tiara to place in the 5th frame. She was so excited to see herself with all the princesses.

Once I made all the princess carriages, I taped them on a piece of pink ribbon. Then, I used push pins to attach the banner to my wall.

Disney Princess Table Centerpiece

Another decoration I made was princess centerpieces for our table. I used tissue paper to make dresses that made them look more 3d and stand up on their own. More directions coming soon. Then, I took my daughter to the Dollar Tree to pick out any tablecloth she wanted. She picked out a metallic rainbow one that I cut to fit both the table and the previously mentioned food area.

Kid Made Disney Princess Party Decor

A few weeks before my daughter’s party, I had a simple step by step princess drawing pop up on Facebook. I knew my daughter would love it, so I printed it out and gave it to her. She loved drawing princesses so much that I found one for drawing a prince as well. She drew a whole bunch of princesses and princes and wanted to use them as decorations for her party. So, we used sticky tack to put them up in the staircase on the way into our house.

You can see in the picture that she used Magic Stix markers to color them. If you haven’t heard of them, you should look them up. They are triangular shaped so they don’t roll all over. And, even better, they have a guarantee that they won’t dry out for 7 days with no lids and they come in a cool case that keeps them organized.

Disney Princess Party Activities:

I had two main activities during my daughter’s Disney princess party. First, I set up tables where the kids could make things to get them in the princess and prince mood. Second, we played a group game that ended with a Maleficent pinata.

Crowns, Wands, and Shields

During past birthday parties, the kids normally ignore my arrival activities and just play with my kids’ toys until everyone shows up. But, for this party I finally found something that worked (at least for most of the time it took for everyone to get here). I set up three tables in our downstairs with things for the kids to make to get them ready to be princesses and princes.

At the three tables they could make crowns, wands, and shields. I also helped them pick out princess and prince names that they labeled each with. More instructions coming soon. In the room that this was set up, I played Disney music from my daughter’s chosen four movies.

Maleficent Pinata Game

If you have seen any of my other party posts, you know that a DIY pinata is a must. For my daughter’s Paw Patrol party last year, we made the pinata into part of a bigger game. That was so much fun, we did that again with this princess party.

More instructions on this larger game coming soon, but the short of it was the kids had to play 4 games as a group to get 4 keys. These keys unlocked a wooden sword that they hit my DIY Maleficent pinata with.

Pinata Sword:

Below is the sword my husband made (you can also buy something similar here). I locked it up using 4 of my daughter’s alphabet locks.

Cinderella Game:

For our Cinderella themed game, the kids went on a glass slipper hunt. My husband also made this “glass” slipper, but you can again buy something similar here. More instructions on this game coming soon.

Rapunzel Game:

Next, I made frying pans out of paper plates for our Rapunzel themed game. The kids used them and balloons to hit down the lantern with a key in it. More instructions coming soon.

Sleeping Beauty Game:

Then, we had a Sleeping Beauty game that centered around sneaking around the Maleficent pinata. The kids had to get pieces of paper that either had the key, sent them to the ground asleep, or let them wake up a friend. More instructions coming soon.

Elsa Game:

Lastly, in our Elsa game we used squirt guns to free a key that Elsa accidently froze in ice. More instructions coming soon.

Maleficent Dragon Pinata:

And once the kids had all the keys, they unlocked the sword and went to defeat the Maleficent pinata with it. Of course the candy was a hit, but the kids also really enjoyed defeating the dragon. One boy ran through the house later with Maleficent’s head on the sword. More instructions on how to make this fun pinata coming soon.

Other Princess Themed Games

I had a couple other game ideas that took no prep in mind in case we needed them. We didn’t end up playing any of them, but here they are in case they work for your party.

  • Rapunzel: Wrap party girl in yellow streamers and pretend it is Rapunzel’s hair
  • Cinderella: Fairy Godmother Says (just like Simon Says)
  • Sleeping Beauty: Sleeping Beauties (just like Sleeping Lions)
  • Elsa: Freeze tag

Disney Princess Party Favors:

I was going to just skip favors for this party, since the kids were already taking home everything they made. And all the pinata candy. But, with Party City closing we got Frozen themed coloring books and Disney princess hair scrunchies really cheap. At least for my kids these were huge hits and they have used them a lot.

Conclusion of My Daughter’s 5th Disney Princess Birthday Party

My daughter had such a good time at her Disney princess party. Everyone enjoyed making things and several crowns were worn throughout the party. Some of the games didn’t go exactly how I planned, but the kids still enjoyed them. Defeating Maleficent was definitely a big hit. I made sure all the activities were something my daughter loved, but I think every kid (0-14) enjoyed themselves. The cake was simple, but again my daughter loved it. The kids sitting near where I was cutting the cake, kept asking for more of the castle walls. Overall, it was a great celebration of my big 5 year old.
