After our E is for elephant craft, it was time to do an alphabet craft that was a little more recognizable. This foam F is for fish craft was simple to make into a recognizable letter and animal. It was also something my three year old daughter could help with. It was so simple in fact that I thought it needed something else. So, we made our fish a little habitat using another F: food coloring.

Materials:

How to Make a Foam F Shaped Fish:

My daughter’s cutting skills are limited. She will cut a little into whatever material and then rip it the rest of the way. So, I cut out all the foam fish pieces. I used Miss Maren’s Monkeys’ F is for fish template and only cut out the F and fish parts. I printed it onto regular printer paper at 70% scale, so it would fit in a quart sized bag later. Then, I traced all the paper pieces onto foam sheets and cut them out. I used dark pink for the F, light pink for all the fish body parts, and white and black for the eye.

Once I finished cutting all the foam pieces out, I had my daughter glue them together with white glue. My daughter squeezed the glue out on the pieces and I pointed where on the F to place them.

Once my daughter put it all together, we let it dry for a day to make sure it was fully set.

How to Stop Our Fish From Falling Apart

Unfortunately, the glue dissolved once we placed our F is for fish craft in the water in the next step. I racked my brain on what my daughter could use instead. Both hot glue and Gorilla glue would hold, but aren’t things my daughter could safely use. Craft Knights had a few more gluing ideas, but still none that I liked. I ended up having my daughter glue it all again with white glue. Then, once it was dry, I glued around all the edges with hot glue. This worked perfectly.

How to Make Water for an F is for Fish Craft:

Now that my daughter had an F shaped fish, it was time to put it in some water. First, I spread some blue food coloring in a plastic quart size bag. Then, my daughter filled it up with water. I sealed the bag and let my daughter shake it up until the blue mixed with water.

Then, we put the foam F shaped fish into the bag. This was a fun frame for our alphabet craft, but it also would have been a fun decoration for an under the sea party.

Conclusion of F is for Fish Craft

We both loved how this F is for fish craft turned out. It looked so fun having it swim around in the blue water. Foam sheets are one of my favorite craft materials, so I was pretty confident this was going to turn out. Because the foam floats so well, it was hard to get it fully in the water, but my daughter didn’t mind. It was all very simple to make and was a fun way to learn about the letter F.
