Knowing my baby was coming in May, I decided I wasn’t going to do anything in our garden this summer. My husband decided that he would instead of it just sitting unused for a year. My four year old daughter helped him plant a lot of it including some flower seeds she picked out. We have been picking them (and dandelions) as centerpieces for our table. I decided to gift some of her flowers as a Bible class teacher appreciation gift. I wanted to get my 2 1/2 year old son involved and needed something to put them in. So, we figured out how to make a DIY vase from an old Danimals yogurt container.

How to Make a DIY Vase as a Teacher Appreciation Gift
Materials:
- Danimals containers or another small plastic container
- Tissue paper
- School glue
- Mod Podge
Prepping the Vases:
Before making your Danimals containers into vases, they obviously need emptied. I had a bunch of empty ones I had kept, but you can also have an impromptu before craft snack to eat some up quickly. Make sure you wash them out well and dry the outside.
Then, I let my kids pick out a couple different colors of tissue paper. I am that weird person that folds up tissue paper given in gifts and keeps it. So, I had a bunch for them to choose from. Lastly, I cut the tissue paper into small squares. Really they were small four sided shapes. I wasn’t careful about how straight I cut or how identical the pieces were.
Decorating the Vases:
Next, I had my kids take over with the DIY vases. They have separate Sunday morning teachers and share the same teacher on Wednesday nights. So, they made three. They each got to use school glue to glue the tissue paper pieces to one Danimals container. Then, they both glued pieces to the third one. I held my son’s vase for him while he glued so he didn’t get glue all over the place.
Finishing the Vases:
Once the vases dried, I coated them in Mod Podge to make them last longer.
And once the vases dried again, I filled them with water and we went outside. They each picked flowers from the garden for me to cut and place in the vases. My daughter is protective of the flowers she grew, so my son got to pick sunflowers instead. I planted them several summers ago and they come back as volunteers every year.
Conclusion of Making a DIY Vase as a Teacher Appreciation Gift
Both of my kids got to Bible class so excited to give their vases to their teachers. All three ladies they gave them to loved them. I like that they are a balance of obviously made by little kids and something that looks nice. My daughter loves making things for people, but that is often a random pile of papers stapled together. I loved that this was a step up from that. What teacher appreciation gifts have your kids made in the past?
