I finally did it! I am super proud of pulling off a plan I have had since I started my blog. It makes it all the better that I was able to do it as part of a Mother’s Day craft. My daughter literally used crayons and spice to make this Mother’s Day picture frame craft. There is an actual reason behind my blog’s name, but I thought it would still be a lot of fun to actually have a craft using both.

A while back my three year old daughter made melted crayon sun catchers. This picture frame is similar, but makes a cute Mother’s Day present instead. While I helped make my own gift, we all know that making it with her was the real gift.

How to Make a Crayon and Spice Mother’s Day Picture Frame Craft

Materials:

Prep:

Before getting started, we had a few things to prep. My three year old daughter helped a bit, but I did most of it. To start, we needed crayon shreds. In the past we have used a cheese grater, but this time we used a crayon sharpener. This allowed my daughter to give it a shot. She shredded a bit, but then delegated the sharpening to me and just picked the crayon colors.

The other prep that needed done was cutting out the frames. I cut cardstock into a 5″X5″ square with my paper cutter. Then, I cut a heart out of the middle.

Creating the Frame:

To start, I placed the heart frame on another piece of cardstock to minimize mess. Then, my daughter sprinkled crayon bits all over it. We tried a few different amounts and sizes. I liked small amounts of smaller pieces the best.

That gave us the crayons, so now we needed the spice. We used sea salt to give the craft a really fun texture. Unfortunately, the pictures don’t show this added texture well. My daughter got to shake the salt on.

Then, we put a piece of parchment paper on the top and I carefully carried it over to my ironing board. My daughter watched from afar while I ironed the frame. It melted the crayon and with the salt gave it a really fun look.

Creating the Picture:

A frame obviously needs something to go inside it. A photo or a keepsake would be cute, but I decided to have my daughter draw a picture of me. My daughter loves drawing. We have even made her a cool picture clothesline to hang all her artwork from. So, it was super easy to give her a 5″X5″ square of cardstock and some markers and have her draw me.

Once I had reminded her that I have a mouth and hair, her picture was complete. Then, all she had to do was glue the frame on to the picture with a glue stick. An older kid would probably want to do this step first to know how much room they had to draw. But, I knew my daughter would draw all over the frame if I did it in that order. Lastly, I wrote “Happy Mother’s Day” on the picture.

Conclusion of Mother’s Day Picture Frame Craft:

I think that my daughter’s frame and picture turned out great. I love that it looks good, but it still says “my 3 year old made this herself”. Making it with her was really fun. It definitely makes me look forward to later years when she makes things for me all by herself. Make sure to also check out the cute Mother’s day craft my one year old son made. I am also still proud (probably more than I should be) that I was able to combine crayons and spice for this craft. While this was the first combo craft, we have made lots of fun crayon crafts before. We have made our own crayons and we have made cool crayon suncatchers.
