Tangled Maximus Costume for a Baby (or Really Anyone)

My four year daughter is obsessed with Rapunzel, so I made the whole family Tangled themed costumes for Halloween. Pascal is my two year old son’s favorite, Mother Gothel was an obvious choice for me, and my husband reluctantly agreed to Flynn Rider. So, since my 5 month old daughter can’t voice her opinions, she was left with Maximus. I quickly found that there weren’t many ideas online for a DIY Tangled Maximus costume. I found this really cool one from The Little Backyard Farm using a cardboard box, but it wouldn’t work well for a baby. So, I started by making a white horse and then added details to make my baby more into Maximus.

I am all about making Halloween costumes that can be reused in some way. I know my daughter will play with her Rapunzel hair and dress for long after Halloween. But since my baby is too young for imaginary play, I made her costume with all removeable pieces. So, she can still wear the hooded onesie and pants when she is no longer Maximus. This costume is fully no sew and the mane, tail, and saddle all come off. If you don’t care about this, you can use hot glue instead of removable fabric tape or even sew everything on.

How to Make a Tangled Maximus Costume

Materials:

Making a White Horse Costume:

First, you need to make a basic white horse costume. I used this horse costume from Jen Spends Less as inspiration and adapted it to look more like Maximus.

Making the Mane

To start, make the mane by cutting a piece of cardboard in a rectangle. Make it as long as you want the mane itself to be and the length you want the hair of the mane to be. Cut a small slit all the way off to one side. Then, stick the end of your white yarn in that slit and start wrapping. Every so often, push the yarn you already have wrapped as much together as you can.

When you reach the end, cut a piece of white felt in a skinny rectangle the same length as your cardboard. Use a hot glue gun to glue it to the edge of the yarn making sure to get glue on all your yarn.

Next, cut along the far end to free your yarn from the cardboard. You now have a mane attached to a piece of felt.

Making the Tail

Now do the same thing with a piece of cardboard the width you want your tail to be. This time you don’t need the yarn to be side by side but instead in several layers. You are done when you have as thick of a tail as you want. Cut a piece of white felt in the shape of a circle and hot glue it to one end. Then, carefully cut the other side, but keep holding the yarn in place. Tie a piece of yarn around the felt circle to make sure all the pieces stay put and hot glue around it some more. You now have a tail attached to a piece of felt.

Making the Ears

Next, make the ears. Cut two curved triangles from a piece of white felt. Use hot glue to glue the top tip and bottom corners together.

Then, cut two skinny ovals from your felt and glue them to the bottom of your ears.

Assembling the Horse Costume

Finally, attach everything you just made to the costume. If you want to be able to take them off later, use removable fabric tape. Otherwise you can hot glue or sew them on. I had problems with my fabric tape not sticking to the felt, so I actually hot glued the tape to the felt.

Attach the mane starting on the hood of either a white hooded onesie or a hoodie. Then, stick the ears to the hood on either side of the mane. Lastly, attach the tail to the back of a pair of white pants. Now you have a basic horse costume.

Making the Horse Into Maximus:

Now it is time to turn your horse costume into a Tangled Maximus costume. I did this by adding a faux leather fabric saddle with the kingdom insignia on the front. The faux leather fabric seems to not really fray so I didn’t sew it at all.

Cutting the Saddle Pieces

To make the saddle, you need to cut 6 simple pieces:

  • A strip a little longer than the waist of your pants
  • A strip that reaches from the waist to the middle of the chest
  • 2 strips that reach from the middle of the chest over the shoulder and to the top of the back
  • A circle that covers the chest and the ends of the previous three strips
  • A rectangle with curved corners just a bit smaller than the back of the onesie

Before adding these pieces to the onesie, you need to add the Corona symbol to the circle piece. I just got a Brother’s Scan and Cut, so I used it to cut yellow cardstock with this free SVG of the symbol. You can also print out the picture and cut it by hand. Glue it to the leather and cover it with Mod Podge to protect it.

Attaching the Saddle

Next, attach all these pieces to your Tangled Maximus costume. Again you can use removable fabric tape like I did, hot glue, or thread.

First, attach the longest strip around the top of your pants. If your pants are stretchy, don’t attach the leather tightly. Leave some excess material between every place you attach it. This will make the pants easier to get on since the leather doesn’t stretch.

Then, attach the saddle and the remaining three strips. Lastly, attach the circle symbol piece covering the ends of your front straps. Since the onesie I used was so stretchy, the pieces stretched apart when I put the costume on my baby. So, I hot glued all the faux leather pieces on the onesie (not the one around the waist) to each other. If you do this, make sure everything is big enough for your baby to still get in since it will no longer stretch.

Conclusion of My Tangled Maximus Costume

My baby looks adorable in her Tangled Maximus costume. But, really it would be hard to make something a baby doesn’t look adorable in. I am really happy with how it turned out and I think you can tell that she is supposed to be Maximus. It was pretty easy to make and none of it is uncomfortable for her to wear. Because of how I glued the saddle, it is a little hard for her to get in, but once on it fits great. Let me know how your Maximus costume turns out in the comments below.
